AI has been used in the review phase of eDiscovery for about a decade.  The cost for AI technology in small cases is prohibitive because of the extra step required within document review technology where seed sets were required and users who could define the parameters for relevance were needed.

The deep learning algorithms of today can observe attorneys reviewing documents and learn the criteria that makes a document relevant to a particular matter.

Although AI will become incrementally more prevalent in eDiscovery and in the Legal Industry in general, we are not at a point where you can interact with a virtual attorney.  We will see AI used as a tool to speed up the review process in eDiscovery and in general streamline the overall eDiscovery process and improve efficiency.
